Skill Focus

Every month, GVL picks one part of the game to work on together. We write about it on the blog, run drills for it at pickup, and talk it through on the court. This page collects it all in one place, sorted by skill.

If you’re new, start with the basics and go from there. If you’ve been playing a while, jump to whatever’s giving you trouble lately. Nobody’s grading you, and nobody expects you to have it down before you show up. Most of this sinks in after you try it a few times with people who’ll tell you what they noticed.

Foundations

Balance, mallet handling, and getting comfortable on the bike. Start here if you’re new. Everything else builds on this.

Offense

Moving the ball, finding open space, and setting up a teammate. Less about scoring, more about getting the ball where it needs to go.

Conditioning

Polo is sprint, stop, repeat. This covers building the fitness to keep your skills working through a whole game.

Defense

Positioning and patience. How to stay between the ball and the goal without chasing every ball on the court.

Teamwork

Talking, passing, and covering for each other. Polo is loud, so a lot of this is learning to read your teammates without words.

Bike Control

Tight turns, track stands, hops, and pivots. Handling skills that make everything else easier once they’re second nature.

Shooting

Clean contact, good angles, and picking the right moment. From stationary shots to shooting on the move with someone on your back.

Rules & Reffing

What gets called and why, plus how to call it yourself. Most pickup games don’t have a ref, so this one’s for everybody.

Strategy

Read the court, use a numbers advantage, and play the clock. The thinking side of the game.

Ball Control

Keeping the ball close and protected. Cradling, dribbling under the bottom bracket, and handling on your weak side.
