October – Bike Polo Strategy
October is strategy month. Less "ride faster," more "know where you're supposed to be and why."
Why Strategy Matters
Bike polo games are typically low-scoring, so a decision in the first few seconds of a possession often matters more than a flashy move. A team that agrees on a simple plan usually beats a group of individually better players chasing the ball.
Our pick-up style is fairly conservative and defense-focused. That's basic sports strategy, not something we invented. We play zones on defense, rotating through them as the ball moves, and when we have it, we move it up if there's a good look or send it home and reset if there isn't.
Strategy Focus for October
Here's what we're paying attention to at pick-up this month:
Knowing your defensive role before the ball is in play
Deciding when to push and when to send it home
Rotating through defensive spots as the ball moves, instead of chasing it
Calling out who's pressuring and who's covering
Adjusting when the score or the clock changes
Thinking about one decision after the game
You're allowed to ask "wait, what are we doing?" before a game starts. Someone else is wondering too.
Bingo Cards
The October card focuses on decisions, so it's less about what you did and more about what you noticed. Fill in what you can.
What “Success” Looks Like
Success in October isn't winning more games. It might look like:
Sending the ball home when there wasn't a good look
Rotating into the next defensive zone when the ball moved
Noticing that your team is down and changing what you're doing
Being able to explain your last decision to someone, even if it was wrong
Come play with us at Gateway Park in Travelers Rest on Tuesday evenings and Saturday afternoons, or at Malvern Hills Park in Asheville on Sunday afternoons. Try a drill, fill in a BINGO square or two, or simply enjoy the company. Everyone's welcome.
