September – Bike Polo Rules and Reffing
September is rules and reffing month. We're getting comfortable with the ruleset, and with the job nobody volunteers for: calling the game.
Why Rules and Reffing Matter
Most pick-up disagreements come from two people remembering the same rule differently. When calls are consistent, and everyone knows what they're looking at, games run smoother, and nobody has to litigate a foul at the wall for five minutes.
Reffing is also the fastest way to learn the rules. Standing on the sideline with a whistle makes you look things up instead of nodding along. Nobody is expected to have the rulebook memorized. The goal is a court where a call gets made, people say "cool," and the game keeps going. If you want the full text, we're walking through the ruleset section by section in our rules series on the blog.
Rules and Reffing Focus for September
Here's what we're paying attention to at pick-up this month:
Learning or reviewing the rules that come up most at pick-up
Checking the actual ruleset when a question comes up, instead of "I think it's..."
Trying a few minutes of reffing, even if you've never done it
Making calls clearly and keeping the game moving
Accepting a call gracefully, including the ones you disagree with
Asking for a rules explanation after the game
Reffing badly at pick-up is allowed. That's how everyone gets better.
Bingo Cards
This bingo card is meant to provide structure. It highlights the habits and skills we're focusing on this month. You will likely fill in many squares naturally simply by showing up to pick up and playing bike polo.
What “Success” Looks Like
Success in September isn't a perfect ref. It might look like:
Knowing where to look when a rules question comes up
Making a call without apologizing for it
Taking a call without taking it personally
Understanding why a rule exists, which makes it easier to remember
Come play with us at Gateway Park in Travelers Rest on Tuesday evenings and Saturday afternoons, or at Malvern Hills Park in Asheville on Sunday afternoons. Try a drill, fill in a BINGO square or two, or simply enjoy the company. Everyone's welcome.
