Street Meat Meets Bike Polo
On Tuesday night, we packed up a few mallets and spare bikes, rolled south, and stopped in on the Street Meat regular ride in Columbia.
Instead of the usual pause-and-snack stop, they were greeted by us, GVL Bike Polo. And we were equipped with mallets, spare bikes, and a plan.
For folks who had never seen bike polo up close—or who have always been a little suspicious of horses—it was a chance to learn how this sport actually works.
An Invitation to Bike Polo
First, Seema from GVL Bike Polo walked the Street Meat crew through the basics:
how the game flows
how to hold a mallet
how to control the bike one-handed
And then we showed them a game.
We’ll admit, we were a little nervous about interrupting a regular Street Meat ride. It’s always a risk to pause a rhythm people know and love. But that worry didn’t last long. Before the demo game was even finished, folks were lining up, asking to try.
In no time, there were riders wobbling, laughing, asking questions, and figuring it out in real time. Bikes tipped. Balls escaped. Confidence grew one tap at a time.
That’s the part that stuck with us.
Bikes, Mallets, and Community
What made the night work wasn’t just the novelty of bike polo. It was the way it fit into the rhythm of Street Meat. No one was rushed or left behind.
It felt less like “a demo” and more like two bike communities overlapping for a moment and realizing we speak the same language: fun with bicycles.
What We Loved Seeing
Curious riders asking good questions
First taps turning into real control
Folks choosing to watch, then jumping in later
A pace that lets people learn without pressure
Ending the Ride Together
After the demo, we rolled on to Transmission Arcade for hangs, games, and conversation. New connections turned into plans to do this again. Before we know it, Cola Bike Polo will be a major club in the Southeast!
And judging by the group photo, there may have been a brief moment where we all wondered: Is Street Meat a bike polo club now?
Thanks for the Night
Huge thanks to Street Meat for the invite and the trust, and to Dana for helping make the connection happen. We had a blast sharing the game and riding alongside you.
We loved seeing so many people on bikes with mallets in hand. We loved being taken on the ride, too.
Hopefully, this wasn’t a one-off. 💙
If you’re ever curious about bike polo—whether you want to play, learn, or just watch—come find us. We’re happy to hand you a mallet and take it slow.
See you soon!
