January – Foundations

In January, as a club, we are focusing on building strong habits, learning the basics, and showing up consistently.

Why Foundations Matter

Foundations matter because everything else in bike polo depends on them. When players understand the rules, feel more in control of their bikes and mallets, and know where they’re supposed to be on the court, games feel more fun and accessible. This supports newer players who are still orienting themselves and gives experienced players a steadier baseline to build from.

Foundation Focus for January

This month is about steady, observable habits:

  1. Showing up consistently to play or practice

  2. Learning or reviewing basic rules and court flow

  3. Asking questions to better understand the game

  4. Practicing fundamental skills without rushing

  5. Helping create a safe, welcoming environment

  6. Building habits that support long-term improvement

Foundation Drills

These drills are here to support January’s focus. Pick one each week and try it for a few minutes between games. Start slow and as you get the hang of it, try speeding up or incorporating other elements.

Straight-Line Control

  • Focus: Balance, ball control, consistency

  • Setup: Open court, one ball per player

  • How to Run: Ride end line to end line while tapping the ball back and forth. No dabs. Pause with control, and no mallet tripod at either end. Repeat 10 times.

  • Progressions: Add a mid-court pause without using a mallet for support; switch the ball to the dark side.

Stop–Start Control

  • Focus: Braking, acceleration, stability

  • Setup: Open space

  • How to Run: Ride forward about 5 feet with mallet down but not touching the ground, come to a complete stop and balance without tripoding, turn to your light side, and return to the starting line. Repeat 10 times.

  • Progressions: Switch to turning toward the dark side.

Figure-8 Turns

  • Focus: Turning fundamentals

  • Setup: Two cones, 6–8 feet apart

  • How to Run: Carry the ball through a figure-8 around both cones 10 times without dabbing or losing the ball.

  • Progressions: Pause briefly at each cone without tripoding; move cones closer and closer together to tighten the turning radius.

Wall Pickup Reps

  • Focus: Ball retrieval fundamentals

  • Setup: Ball placed along the boards

  • How to Run: Approach slowly, clean pickup, pass back along the boards, repeat 10 times.

  • Progressions: Increase the speed at which you approach the wall, collect the ball, and pass it; Switch to crossing your mallet to the dark side and do the same drill

Bingo Cards

This bingo card is meant to provide structure. It highlights the habits and skills we are highlighting this month. You will likely fill in many squares naturally simply by showing up to pick up and playing bike polo.

What “Success” Looks Like

Success in January doesn’t necessarily mean winning games or scoring goals. It can mean:

  • Feeling a little more stable on the bike

  • Noticing where you fit into the community

  • Asking questions without hesitation

  • Understanding the flow of the game more than last time

Come play with us at Gateway Park in Travelers Rest on Saturdays at 2pm. Try a drill, fill in a BINGO square or two, or simply enjoy the company.
